Originally ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda was as an essential baking ingredient. ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda is a leavening agent, helping dough to rise. When ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda in a batter is heated and combined with acidic ingredients, like lemon juice or buttermilk, it gives off carbon dioxide which, in turn, causes the batter to rise. Add ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda to your dough or batter. It will be light and porous and that makes for one tasty cake!

There is no easy test for determining the effectiveness beyond the expiration date which appears on the bottom of every box of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda. For uses requiring optimum performance, such as baking, we recommend purchasing a fresh box.

As they are fundamentally different products, you may not substitute ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda for baking powder in a recipe. You can make a baking powder substitute using ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda. To make the equivalent of 1 teaspoon baking powder, mix 5/8 teaspoons of cream of tartar with ¼ teaspoon ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda.

Both baking soda and baking powder are used in baking to help dough rise, for leavening. ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda is a natural pure sodium bicarbonate. Baking powder is a mixture of baking soda and various acidic ingredients. ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda needs to react in combination with acidic ingredients, like cream of tartar or lemon juice, to release the carbon dioxide that causes dough to rise. Baking powder, which already contains these acidic ingredients, is used in recipes without other acidic ingredients.

ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda can help in the initial handling of small grease or electrical fires by smothering and cooling the fire. Make sure help is within reach! Keep a package handy for your first response!

Here's how:

Small Cooking Fires

For small cooking fires in frying pans, broilers, ovens or grills, turn off the gas or electricity if you can safely do so. Stand back and throw handfuls of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda at the base of the flame to help put out the fire - call the Fire Department just to be safe! To avoid re-ignition, do not attempt to move the item until thoroughly cooled. Don't use ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda in deep fat fryers; it may splatter.

Small Electrical Fires

For small electrical fires in small appliances, heaters or outlets, unplug appliances if you can safely do so. Stand back and toss handfuls of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda at the base of the flames to help put out the fire - call the Fire Department to be sure the fire is completely out!

Here's a hot tip! Remember never use water on an electrical fire, as shock or electrocution could result!

Freshen your sink drains any time with a sprinkle of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda down the drains while running warm water from the tap for 1-2 minutes. We also recommend that when you're replacing the ARM & HAMMER® Fridge- Freezer® pack from your refrigerator and freezer, you 'recycle' the ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda by pouring it down your drains. We do not recommend or endorse the use of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda to unclog drains.

We recommend you replace your ARM & HAMMER® Fridge-Freezer boxes every 3 months to keep food tasting like it should.

Cleaning Booster

ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda works with liquid laundry detergent to make it work harder for you. Just add ½ cup of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda to your wash with the usual amount of liquid detergent.

When using chlorine bleach, add ½ cup of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda with a ½ cup of bleach, instead of the usual 1 cup, to get whites whiter without smelly harsh chemicals that can damage clothes.

Deodorizing Clothes

Freshen smelly laundry like work shirts, baby bibs or musty towels by adding ½ cup of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda in the rinse cycle. This will neutralize and eliminate odours. Use it as a cloth diaper soak; dissolve ½ cup of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda in 2 quarts of water to keep those smells down.
